But market forces cause medical care to expand: both to provide more services to patients and to produce more patients to serve.\n\nNew models of delivering routine primary care in lower-cost settings (such as retail clinics) have a role, but they will do little to address the bulk of health care costs, most of which are generated by care for more-complex diseases. Outcomes are also starting to be incorporated in real time into the process of care, allowing providers to track progress as they interact with patients.
